Do athletes and non-athletes receive different physiotherapy treatments?

According to a study of the London 2012 Olympic Village polyclinic, the treatment mix differed in the percentages reported. At first visits, treatment massage was recorded in 24.7% of athlete encounters versus 16.7% for non-athletes, and mobilisation in 16.5% versus 28.3%. Cryotherapy was recorded in 10.6% versus 5.6%. At follow-up visits, acupuncture accounted for 12.6% of non-athlete encounters versus 3.1% for athletes. The study did not run statistical tests on these treatment comparisons, and only the primary treatment per visit was recorded, so other techniques are under-represented.[1]

Do athletes only visit a physiotherapist when injured?

According to a study of the London 2012 Olympic Village polyclinic, no. Athletes could use the service for injury treatment and also for injury prevention, recovery, maintenance and performance support. The authors describe non-athletes as generally attending for injuries that occurred during the Games or flare-ups of pre-existing injuries. Visits for assessment only, prevention, recovery or general massage made up 16.0% of athletes' first visits and 20.6% of non-athletes' first visits, and that difference was not statistically significant.[1]

Do athletes and non-athletes see a physiotherapist for different parts of the body?

According to a study of 1,778 physiotherapy encounters at the London 2012 Olympic Village, the overall pattern of body areas differed between athletes and non-athletes. Neck complaints made up 15.2% of non-athletes' first visits versus 5.2% for athletes, and upper leg complaints made up 12.6% of athletes' first visits versus 1.3% for non-athletes. Both differences were statistically significant. The lower back and knee were common in both groups, with no significant difference. The authors attribute the differences to the different physical demands of each group.[1]

Are muscle injuries a bigger share of athletes' physiotherapy visits than non-athletes'?

According to a study of the London 2012 Olympic Village polyclinic, muscle injuries made up 33.3% of athletes' first-visit diagnoses versus 24.4% for non-athletes, a statistically significant difference. Joint injuries were the most common diagnosis among non-athletes (30.1% versus 24.8% for athletes), but that difference was not significant. Arthritis or inflammatory conditions were more common among non-athletes (4.4% versus 1.0%, significant). These are proportions among people who attended physiotherapy, not injury rates across all athletes.[1]

Can coaches and officials use physiotherapy at the Olympic Games?

According to a study of the London 2012 Olympic Village polyclinic, yes. The service was open to all accredited athletes and non-athletes, including team officials, coaches, managers, organizing committee workforce, Olympic family, technical officials and press. No referral or accompanying person was required, because UK chartered physiotherapists are permitted to treat without a referral.[1]
